She Sees Red | Nintendo Switch Review
Updated: Nov 19, 2021
She Sees Red is an interactive thriller developed and published by Rhinotales. Initially it was released on the PC in July 2019 and is currently also available on XBox One, Nintendo Switch as well as on both iOS and Android mobile devices. The game comes with an 18+ certificate due to the content that includes violence, blood and gore, as well as some brief nudity.
She Sees Red was my first experience playing through an interactive full motion video live action movie. I have played games in the past that contain FMV mixed in with the general point-and-click core, like The X-Files game. I was looking forward to playing through She Sees Red, and it did not disappoint. It really just felt like I was watching a movie, and also participating in the story, and helping to choose the outcome through the choices I made.
If you are new to interactive games such as She Sees Red, you are basically watching the movie play out, but with the added bonus that you get to make choices throughout, which will decide the actions of the characters as well as the ending. The story starts off with the main character, a female investigator, arriving at a nightclub with her partner, after a murder has been committed. There appears to be someone inside the club killing off members of the security team. As the story plays out, you will get to make decisions as the killer that will in turn decide what actions the investigator takes in the story.
There are multiple paths to be taken within the story and 4 actual endings, and after you play your second playthrough of the story, you have the option to skip scenes that you have seen already. I found this helpful for getting to those all important scenes where you get to make your choices, especially on later playthroughs, so that I could choose the alternate options, trying to uncover more of the story. You will need to play through the game a few times, so that you can 'unlock' the full story, so there is scope here for replay value. I played through it 5 times, trying to get all the endings, but only managed to uncover 3 of the 4 available, so I will be going back for more, as I seek that elusive final ending. Each playthrough can take between 30-40 minutes, but you get so engrossed in the story that you don't notice the time.
The production of She Sees Red, both as a game and the movie contained within it are both outstanding. The actors, the dialogue, and the direction are all on point, and I was a little bit worried going in that this may not be the case. I think that this is something that makes She Sees Red such an enjoyable experience, and that allows you to get fully immersed within the game and to the story. It moves along almost flawlessly just as if you were watching a movie.
There are options in She Sees Red to play with the native Russian language track and to use the English subtitles. This is the option I went for with all of my playthroughs. If you prefer though you can switch the language track over to an English dubbed version, as seen in the game's trailer below, and you have the option to have subtitles on or off, depending on your own preference. I think I just preferred my playthrough with the original Russian language. There is also a behind the scenes gallery included which features lots of production photos and some videos, which add to the whole package here, and give you a little insight to it all.
So to sum up, She Sees Red is a enjoyable interactive experience. I found myself completely engrossed in the story, and thoroughly enjoyed replaying through it, making those different choices each time, and trying to get those different endings. If you enjoy crime thrillers, then this is your chance to technically be part of one, making those all important decisions to let the story unfold. There is some violence, a bit of gore and some brief nudity during the story, and it comes with an 18+ certificate, so take this into account, if that is not for you. But I did absolutely love this game and just the whole experience and with that in mind I would say...
