Tails of Iron | Nintendo Switch Review
Updated: Nov 19, 2021
Developed by Odd Bug Studio and published by United Label, Tails of Iron is a hand-drawn 2D RPG adventure game. It is currently available on Windows PC, PlayStation, XBox, and Nintendo Switch. For the purpose of this review I was playing on the Nintendo Switch version in handheld mode.

After the merciless frog clan invades your kingdom and slaughters your father, you take control of Redgi, heir to the rat throne as you attempt to rebuild your broken kingdom. Along the way you will battle various different enemies including frogs, mozi's, grubs and moles. Depending on which enemy you are facing at the time will determine which equipment you will select. The axe is heavy and slow to wield while the spear is fast and nimble. If you prefer something more balanced then your trusty sword might be the right choice for you. Each piece of armour will have different resistance levels to each different enemy type so again, you will have to select accordingly. Each item is also weighted differently so you have to be mindful of that too. If everything is too heavy, it will slow down your movement and make dodging so much more difficult but on the other hand, it will increase your defence stats so you have to decide what is the right compromise for your playing style.

The combat in Tails of Iron is brutal and extremely unforgiving. As I mentioned before, you have the choice of a spear, sword or axe and you also have ranged weapons at your disposal such as a bow. You must parry, block and dodge attacks in order to keep yourself alive while at the same time trying to plan when you will take the next swing of your weapon. Each hit taken from an enemy deals huge amounts of damage so you can not afford to let your guard down, even for a second. The combat in this is almost like a puzzle in itself. You have to take time to learn your enemies' attack patterns and movements. The boss battle’s are extremely difficult and can be very frustrating but this makes it so much more rewarding once you finally slay your foe.

Throughout your journey you will be joined by the wonderful voice of Doug Cockle (voice of Geralt of Rivia from The Witcher game series) as he narrates you through this epic adventure. As a massive fan of The Witcher, this was such a glorious addition to the experience for me.

Visually, Tails of Iron is absolutely stunning with its hand drawn artwork. I really like the way this game looks, the colours are sharp and the environments were a joy to explore. With each area having different background music, everything just fits so perfectly. It really has been put together incredibly well.

Tails of Iron really took me by surprise and totally blew me away. Even when I found myself dying countless times trying to beat some of the bosses, the enjoyment never faded for me. I really can not recommend this game enough and if you are a fan of a good dad joke like me, there are some really great puns to look out for in here too. The story is charming and a little heartbreaking at times but I felt myself totally engrossed all the way through.
