The Magnificent Trufflepigs | Nintendo Switch Review
Updated: Nov 19, 2021
The Magnificent Trufflepigs is a first person, metal detecting narrative game set in the English countryside developed by Thunkd and published by AMC Games. You play as Adam, returning to his childhood village of Stanning, and along with Beth, are searching an old farm trying to uncover some local treasure. As you search the fields with a metal detector you keep in contact with Beth using walkie talkies. As cracks begin to appear in Beth's fairytale plan for everything, you'll delve into her history and discover all may not be as it seems. And you'll have to choose how Adam responds to Beth as she faces her demons. The Magnificent Trufflepigs is currently available on both Windows PC and Nintendo Switch. For the purposes of this review I was playing on the Nintendo Switch in handheld mode.
Visually, The Magnificent Trufflepigs is stunning, set in the English countryside with beautiful landscapes and luscious green fields, coupled with a very pleasant soundtrack making it a joy to roam around the farm in search of some treasures from the past. In terms of gameplay, there is nothing really satisfying in this but the story is where this game really wants you to focus your attention.
With a little over 2 hours of gameplay, there isn’t really much to sink your teeth into here and there isn’t really much in the way of replayability. A second playthrough getting Adam to respond to Beth differently from the first time and you will have exhausted this game's lifespan. All in all I thought this was a charming game but the whole experience was just “okay”. It was a rather pleasant experience to uncover each item buried in the fields and interesting to see what trinkets you were going to find next. It was also compelling to hear about Beth's struggles and to see how she reacted and grew with each situation but there was nothing that really grabbed me and had me screaming for more. It did not make me sad when the end credits started rolling but equally, it was not offensive by any means. If you are looking for a game to give you a really chilled out experience with a half decent storyline, then this is worth a look; however, don’t expect to be blown away when you sit down to play this one.
PaultheBrave09’s Rating: 3 trufflepigs out of 5.
