UnMetal | Nintendo Switch Review

Updated: Nov 19, 2021

UnMetal is a top-down 2D stealth action adventure game steeped in humour. Developed by Unepic Fran and Published by Versus Evil, it is available on Windows PC, PlayStation, XBox, and Nintendo Switch. For this review, I was playing on Nintendo Switch in handheld mode.

You play as Jessie Fox, a civilian who is being interrogated as you relay your story of how you escaped after a crack commando unit threw you in prison for a crime you didn’t commit. You have to move around different locations, trying to avoid guards and various other high tech security devices such as lasers, thermal detectors and landmines in your bid for freedom. There are various weapons to find and craft on your journey which will aid you in your adventure including guns, a slingshot and even chloroform soaked rags to subdue the enemy guards. Jessie will encounter friends on his escape mission which can be contacted by radio to give hints and objectives to complete. As you take out the enemy guards, you will increase your skill level and each time you move up a level, you get to choose which abilities and skills you wish to improve. You will encounter a variety of different Boss fights, each one more outrageous and comical than the last. But don’t let the extravagance and humorous nature of UnMetal fool you, this game is no walk in the park. It is challenging without being too over the top difficult, I think they got the balance just right with this one.

Right off the bat, the controls did not feel intuitive for me, however, it is super easy to change the button mapping in the settings which I had to do pretty early on. Once I got that out of the way, I was free to experience UnMetal in all its hilarious glory. Not many games have ever made me laugh as much as this. There were numerous occasions where I found myself giggling for at least 5 minutes after the last joke. They really nailed the comedy in this. If you think Metal Gear Solid with the humour of the Hot Shots movies sprinkled on top then you won’t be far off with this one. As a massive fan of both, UnMetal sucked me in right from the start. There are lots of little nods to Metal Gear Solid which I absolutely loved, you may even come across the trusty cardboard box. Even the process for saving your game had me laughing every single time. You need to find a urinal and have a pee in order to save the game. You can also collect portable potties which can be used to save the game when you are not close to a urinal. But be careful, once you use the portable potty, you will need to then find a urinal to empty said potty before it can be used again. Just little ridiculous things like this really did make me smile all the way through this game.

UnMetal looks absolutely wonderful on the small screen of the Nintendo Switch and it really feels like it was made for the handheld device. The top down, 16-bit style graphics really makes this feel like an old classic but the modern mechanics brings the gameplay into the present day.

I enjoyed every minute of UnMetal with its Metal Gear Solid-esque stealthy gameplay and its Hot Shots style comedy. It was an absolute winner for me and I would recommend that everyone adds this to their collection.

PaultheBrave’s Rating: 5 trips to the urinal out of 5.
