Virtuous Western | Nintendo Switch Review
Updated: Nov 19, 2021
Developed by Nibb Games and published by Ratalaika Games, Virtuous Western is a strategy game based in the old wild west. It is currently available on Windows PC, PlayStation, XBox, and Nintendo Switch. For the purposes of this review, I was playing Virtuous Western on the Nintendo Switch in handheld mode.
You take control of the hero as you make your way through 30 levels filled with enemies. With limited ammunition, you must work out the best way to take out those dusty old cowpokes who have captured your faithful companion.
Armed with your trusty revolver, you have to collect bullets and in some cases sticks of dynamite to kill the bad guys before they kill you. You will also have to find ways to use the environment to your advantage in order to prevail in your quest.
I thought the visuals in Virtuous Western were great with a cute pixel art style which really gives it an old school vibe which is rather pleasing to the eyes. The music was very pleasant and really fit well with the style of the game. The controls are pretty basic and easy to master as there isn’t too much going on in the game but they serve their purpose well.
This was by no means a long game, I finished all levels in around 40 minutes on my first playthrough but it was a really nice puzzle experience. It took a couple of tries to get used to judging the trajectory of the sticks of dynamite when you throw them but once you have this mastered there isn’t really much challenge in getting through each level. On completion of the main game in Virtuous Western you will unlock a speedrun mode which does give the game some added replayability and adds some competition.
As a whole, I enjoyed my wee trip through the wild west to rescue my trusty steed but I would have preferred a bit more of a challenge. For anyone looking for an entertaining little puzzler, Virtuous Western is a great option and at its very low price point, you can’t go wrong with this one. Now, where did I leave my cowboy hat?
PaultheBrave09’s Rating: 3 sticks of dynamite out of 5.
